Launched in 1976, the 400GT was notable as the first Ferrari to offer automatic transmission as an option. Maranello’s flagship, this splendidly equipped 2+2 featured self-levelling rear suspension, power-assisted steering, electric windows and optional air conditioning. Its arrival re-affirmed Ferrari’s determination to compete with the world’s finest luxury saloons, though the car’s biggest potential market - the United States - remained closed to it because of the latter’s safety and emissions legislation. Even after its 4.8-litre V12 received fuel injection in 1979, the model - now renamed ‘400i’ - remained effectively a Europe-only car. A rare, right-hand drive example, this automatic-transmission 400i comes with comprehensive service history with Maranello Concessionaires, Modena Engineering and other recognised specialists, in addition to 13 expired MoTs on file confirming the recorded mileage of circa 51,500. In present ownership since February 1998, the car underwent extensive bodywork refurbishment that year and a photographic record of this work is included. The car has been fitted with stainless-steel exhaust manifolds, transponder immobiliser system, new door and boot seals and new carpets, and is presented in good condition throughout. Finished in Blue Celeste with matching dark blue leather interior, it is offered with current MoT, road fund licence to March 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document.
