Gas leak repair

This was something I should have repaired way earlier. I'm not sure when it manifested exactly but at a cold start the car was occassionly leaking a few drops of gas at the back. It surely became worse which I noticed last year on my trip abroad. I already suspected something wrong with the return gas fuelline or such since it only happened when it was running cold. On my last little trip in November when I collected a set of rims the car was also playing up a little when driving. It was the first time I didn't feel exactly comfortable. So finally time today to look into the leaking. Unfortunately I still don't have a proper car lift so I had to use a jack to inspect underneath the car.

Then just running the fuel pump a few times and yes the leaking started. When checking I could see indeed the return fuel line, actual the last piece which is the rubber hose with clothing, became soaking wet.

And the gas drops found it's way via the chassis tube exactly above the exhaust tube. Nice. I guess I must have been a bit Lucky here. So time to get it replaced for a new one. Well, after almost 40 years it wouldn't do any harm. It was a bit of a fiddly job but doable. So here the dismantled hose:

Bought a new piece for € 6,- and had it replaced. In the boot I had to remove the clothing to reach the upper part of the tank hose where the return gate goes into.

Turning on the fuel pump a few times and presto no more fuel leaking. Started up the car after being unused for a few months and it almost ran in one go. Nice! Love the sound of it, it ran very well. I'm not sure how much effect this leakage on the fuel return line might had. I would expect little to none. But I sense on my last trip it must have caused the small hiccup / performance drop when driving.

Just had another look into the old hose and removed the clothing. And it came quickly apparent the rubber was aged and broken

Although the weather was very good today I didn't take it out on a test drive. Besides officially I'm not allowed to use it on the road either due to Dutch roadtax reasons. So I have to wait for the 1st of March.

Ferrari 400 parts for sale

Last week Sunday I visited this company who offered some 400 part for sale. I spotted their advert on the Dutch Marktplaats and gave them a call for an appointment. To my surprise they had also this slashed 400 bodyshell on stock. It was a 400i phase 2 with red interior and judging on the label it must have been a manul version. The complete red interior was available amongst various other parts, including 365 GT4 2+2 parts. It has their interest to sell the whole lot in one go. So if you are interested this is their website:

https://www.italiancarparts.eu/ (feel free to mention my name/blog).

As for that bodyshell, I was told this was previously owned by a collector that lived nearby Mulhouse and this car was used by Sbarro for one of his creations, see also blog:

and

And this blog also mentions another 365 body leftover that was used by Sbarro which went also to a Swiss collector. It might potentially be from the same collector:

Ferrari by Pininfarina - technology and beauty - by Etienne Cornil

Another book I purchased. A very nice book with a very good overview of the Ferrari line. And of course it had a section about the 400. A very well written piece with nice supporting photo material. It did had some pictures I had not seen before, so adding them to picture archive.

The book itself has been published in various languages, even in Dutch. The book has ISBN nr 90-396-1696-5 (978903616963)

Monaco Museum - Collection de Voitures de S.A.S le Prince de Monaco - Ferrari 400i white on white

I came across this one and frankly I was not aware there was a car museum in Monaco. But since the Prince de Monaco is a car enthusiast I should not be surprised.

This is the official website: http://www.mtcc.mc/en/

I'm not sure if the spotted 400i is part of his collection or if it was part of a temporary exhibition or such. In any case it's a Ferrari 400i white on white, can't be many of them. So I wonder if this is a known one? The black striping is definately a remarkable feature as well.

Update 27-1-2018: I received the following update about this car:

https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/19465/lot/161/

And when further checking this confirms my suspicion, it's this one which is residing in the Netherlands but now without the black striping:

Silverstone Auctions : 1982 Ferrari 400 GTi Manual RHD

They keep popping up. This looks like a very nice specimen to me. Adding it here for the records and to see for how much it will go. But also due to the mention of the first ownership which remarkably seems to be a lady. I couldnt find much more detail about her.

This 1982 Ferrari 400 GTi, one of only 25 manual UK-market, right-hand drive cars, was supplied through Emblem Sports cars on 9th November 1982 to its first owner, a Mrs A. Fournier of Poole, Dorset. Finished in a delightful shade of Azzurro Metallica with Beige/Sky Blue hide, the car was specified with Royal Blue carpets along with desirable rear air-conditioning - a £710 option from new!  After a couple of years of ownership, the Ferrari was sold to a Mr J.D Lawrence who kept it until 2004 when it was purchased by a Mr J. Connell.

Brochure 1983 - Ferrari worldchampions - Ferrari 400i

I got ahold of this brochure with an overview of the models available in 1983, including the 400i. I suspect it's a brochure for the UK market. It's now available in the download folder.
